1st Dist Celebration

50 yrs of Republican Leadership
Virginia’s 1st District

History:
Borrowing from Wikipedia Virginia’s 1st Congressional District is frequently  referred to as “America’s First District” since it includes the Historic Triangle of Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Yorktown. In the 18th and early 19th century, it included northwestern Virginia as well as the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia after the American Civil War.

In the November 1976 Congressional race, Paul Trible won his first term as a member of the US Congress, representing the 1st Congressional District. Congressman Trible continued his tenure in that seat through 1983.

Replacing Trible in the 1st District seat was Jo Ann Davis, serving through 2008, who unfortunately passed away in October 2007 while still in office.

A young Virginia House of Delegates representative, Rob Wittman, was first elected to the United States Congress in a special election, and subsequentially elected to his first full term in 2008. In the heavily Republican 1st District; he has served in this capacity, most recently being re-elected for his ninth full term in 2024.

With this previous history, “The 1st“ has now been in Republican hands since continually since1977, a legacy spanning fifty years of Republican representation!

On Saturday, May 31, the 1st District is holding a special event celebrating those years, and the elected representatives and their families.
