Failing Schools = Tax Increase ?

Many of you have attended prior meetings regarding the School Board Budget expecting to see more action taken. Now the BOS and School Board are looking ahead to the ’24-’25 fiscal year which begins next July 1.

In 2022, Northumberland County total, local revenues were $21.5 million, and expected to be $22M for fy23 During these same periods, the School Board budget accounted for $13.5 and $15.6 mil (63% & 71%) respectively !

School funding for 2023, from all sources, totaled $26.5 MILLION! With 1,170 students in all grades, this amounts to $22,693 per student! This EXCEEDS the tuition for a Freshman student at Old Dominion University!

Allowing our School Board to continue spending at this uncontrolled level will do only one sure thing…

Joint Finance Committee

The button below takes you to a YouTube video of the initial joint meeting. This meeting lasted an hour and ten minutes and brings clarity to the general issue. Watching it hopefully will generate some additional interest and questions that can be taken forward regarding the schools and the board of supervisors.
